Bodybuilders may be driven to taking steroids because of their profession. But now, many general gym-goers are beginning to find the shortcut to a muscular body, irresistible. What they don't realise is that in the long run, "brittle bones, high blood pressure and a moon-face are some of the more prominent side-effects," says general physician Arun Kumar.
"The damage to the liver and kidney are well known. If not administered correctly, steroids can be life-threatening as well," says Kumar. Executive in a multinational company, Prem Gupta, 23, found this out the hard way.
Two years ago, Prem joined a gym in Andheri where the trainer recommended he take 'specific doses' of the steroids Sustanon and Deca (the latter is now banned). He had to inject them into his system every alternate day for two months. "I knew they were steroids, but stupid and ambitious as I was, I went ahead because I wanted quick results," says Gupta. Prem gained 15kg of muscle weight in two months, which brought about a drastic change in his physical appearance -- and confidence. "People started reacting positively to my new physique," he says. "I started feeling good about that."
Shortly after, Gupta developed a high fever that he assumed would go away in a day or two. But it kept returning. After having fever for over a month, and losing a lot of his strength, Prem admitted to the doctor treating him that he had consumed steroids.
"Thankfully my liver wasn't damaged because I had maintained a good diet even when taking steroids," he says. "But my immunity had taken a battering, and it took a long time to return to good health. It was scary." It's been two years since the ordeal, and Prem is back at the gym. But he's staying away from steroids, even if it means having a less muscular body.

Brit caught by UK customs with 14000 amps of testosterone ( weighing 35 kg )
"A SHEFFIELD man was caught with thousands of pounds worth of illegal steroids stashed in two holdalls at Heathrow Airport, a court in London heard. Parvez Atta, of Main Road, Darnall, is accused of trying to smuggle 35 kilogrammes of testosterone – a banned Class C drug – into Britain in March this year.
The drug was contained in 14,000 tiny vials worth an estimated worth an estimated £40,000 on the blackmarket.
Atta, aged 37, told Isleworth Crown Court he had bought the substance from a man in Pakistan for around £6,000 before boarding a flight from Karachi.
After arriving in Heathrow Airport's Terminal 3 he was quizzed by customs officers and initially denied having anything to declare.
He later admitted he had the vials of the drug in two bags after officers said they wanted to search him.
Atta is later claimed to have said he planned to sell the vials in South Yorkshire for a few hundred pounds of profit, but that he did not know they were banned.
Customs Officer Hardeep Mohan said he arrested Atta after searching his bags and finding the drug contained in ampules, small vials used by doctors giving injections.
Mr Mohan told the court: "I asked him if had anything to declare and he said 'No'. I said, 'Are you sure, because I'm going to search your bags'.
"He said, 'I do have something in the bags', I said, 'What?' and he replied, 'Steroids'."
Atta was then taken to a room for questioning.
Atta denies knowingly importing an illegal Class C drug and his trial continues."
6000 UKP for 14000 amps means just 42 pence (USD $0.70) an amp and an estimated resale value of 2.85 UKP each (USD $4.72)
The baggage weight limit in economy class is usually 20kg, business 30kg so he either paid a hefty excess baggage charge or the two holdalls were his carry on luggage. ( In which case they can't be xraying hand luggage at Karachi's airport which is rather worrying ).

Ever wondered what the current official UK version of Sustanon looks like ?

Here's the actual ones I get prescribed from Britain's National Health Service.
My GP will only prescribe one amp at a time so I end up paying more getting them at Boots ( a famous chain of pharmacies in UK ) than buying black market, however HG peace of mind is priceless :-)
( sorry for the poor quality pic it was taken with a camera phone at the surgery prior to shooting, evil nurse kept the empty vial and box )
British bust gives insight into the mysterious world of the UK's personal use amounts rule.
A convenience store owner is alleged to have had Karachi Sustanon, Proviron and sleeping aids on sale. UK customs inspected one of the padded envelopes posted in Pakistan and found the drugs. During the following 16 days seven more bags were intercepted by customs.
The eight bags contained, in total, 5,280 sleeping tablets, 368 ampules of testosterone and 1,680 tablets of Proviron. A further 1,830 sleeping tablets, 320 Proviron tablets and 130 ampules of Sustanon.
The accused told police he suffered from medical conditions which were helped by the drugs and he had agreed to the suggestion of a friend that they be mailed directly from Pakistan, where they were cheaper to buy than in UK.
Customs estimated he had enough sleeping tablets to last him more than nine years, enough Sustanon for four years and 500 days supply of Proviron.
Using the figures from his trial we can get an idea of what UK customs considers to be a personal use amount of gear :
Total seizure of 500 ampules of Sustanon and 2000 Proviron tabs.
500 amps divided by 208 week ( 4 years ) = 2.5 amps a week.
2000 tabs divided by 500 days = 4 tabs a day.
2.5 amps of Sustanon 250 a week + 4 tabs a day of Proviron 25mg.
That's 625 mg week of injectables + 100 mg a day of orals, seems like a reasonably fair amount to me :-)
