Big Brother takes over UK on Monday.

Starting on Monday the 6th of April ISPs and telephone companies in the UK will be legally obliged to keep details of mobile calls, emails and websites visited for a year. The Government is claiming that the new retention powers will not permit the storage of the content of emails or phone calls but it will show details such as IP addresses, dates, times and user telephone numbers.

This makes no sense to me, it's a bit like saying we'll be photocopying the envelopes of letters you snail mail but not bothering to open or read them. I think we can safely assume that the contents of calls and emails is exactly what the Government is interested in despite their claims otherwise.

This new law in UK is of course bad news for anyone involved in the trade of products online. Hopefully most UK based AS sales sites are already hosted offshore and using some form of email encryption. Personally I'm still keen on Hushmail and reckon it's pretty safe if used correctly. It's certainly way better than using nothing at all which sadly the majority of people in the UK do.
