A Resevoir man who became a bodybuilder because he was bullied had a weight lifted off his shoulders when he was spared jail last week for importing steroids. Judge Graeme Hicks said Brenton Philip Dowell, 25, was a fat kid at school and became obsessed with bodybuilding to the point where it took over his life. The judge said that between September and December 2010, Dowell imported large amounts of anabolic steroids and human growth hormone from China, through the post. He paid more than $11,000 for the illegal drugs. “I accept your importation of steroids was a misguided way of trying to improve your body,” the County Court judge said. “It is an aggravating factor that the goods imported were not solely for personal use, but did have a commercial flavour, to the extent you were going to on-sell such products to your friends and acquaintances to cover expenses.” Dowell, of Reservoir, pleaded guilty to three counts of importing the tier 1 drugs testosterone and trenbolone acetate, along with human growth hormone, and to possession of anabolic steroids and human growth hormone. The total amount of active testosterone illegally imported by Dowell was 3181.35 grams - enough to last a person 61 years. Judge Hicks said Dowell had a difficult family background. Both his parents had been illicit drug users, and he had left home at the age of 13 or 14. Judge Hicks said Dowell had never abused alcohol or other drugs, had always been employed, and had no previous convictions. He believed Dowell’s prospects of rehabilitation were very good. Dowell was still a bodybuilder but no longer used steroids. The judge said the offending had a degree of sophistication because it involved transferring money from Australia to China using false names. But the goods were sent to Dowell’s own home and to the addresses of relatives. Judge Hicks imposed a total sentence of two years’ jail, but he released Dowell on condition he be of good behaviour for two years. Dowell was also fined a total of $9000.
